Base64 Encoder & Decoder

Base64 turns data into plain text made of letters, digits and a few symbols, so it can travel through systems that only handle text, such as JSON, URLs and e-mail headers. Paste text to encode it, or paste Base64 to read what it says.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text or your Base64 string into the box.
  2. Tick the URL-safe option if the result will go into a URL or a file name.
  3. Press Encode to Base64 or Decode from Base64.
  4. Copy the result.

Good to know

  • Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
  • It makes data about 33% larger: every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
  • The standard alphabet uses + and /. The URL-safe alphabet uses - and _ instead, and usually drops the = padding.
  • Text is converted as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and non-Latin scripts survive the round trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 used for?
Embedding small files in HTML or CSS (data URIs), sending binary data inside JSON, HTTP Basic authentication headers, and the parts of a JSON Web Token.
Is Base64 secure?
No. It is only a different way of writing the same data. Use real encryption if the content is sensitive.
Why does decoding say the result is not valid text?
The Base64 may hold binary data, such as an image or a zip file, instead of text. This tool shows text only.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
