Color harmonies explained

  • Complementary: two colors opposite each other on the wheel. High contrast and energy.
  • Analogous: neighbors on the wheel. Calm and cohesive.
  • Triadic: three colors evenly spaced. Vibrant but balanced.
  • Tetradic: four colors forming a square. Rich, and it works best when one color dominates.
  • Split complementary: a color plus the two neighbors of its complement. Contrast with less tension.
  • Monochromatic: one hue in different lightness levels. Safe and elegant.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a palette well?
A common rule is 60-30-10: about 60% of the space in a dominant color, 30% in a secondary one and 10% in an accent.
Does this work for painting and not only for screens?
The harmonies come from the color wheel, so they are a useful starting point for traditional media too. Pigments mix differently from light, so test your colors on paper or canvas.
Can I use the colors commercially?
Yes. Colors themselves are not copyrighted, so you can use the generated codes freely in your work.
Where does the random color come from?
It picks a medium-bright color so that the result is easy to work with. Press the button again for another one.
