How it is counted

  • Words are counted with your browser word segmentation, so it works for many languages.
  • Characters are counted as Unicode symbols, so letters with accents count as one and most emoji count as one too.
  • Sentences end with a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis.
  • A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next one by a blank line.
  • Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute.

Frequently asked questions

Is the text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is stored, so closing the page erases the text.
Why is my word count different from my word processor?
Programs count hyphenated words, numbers and symbols in slightly different ways. Small differences of a few words are normal.
How long is a page?
About 500 words single-spaced, or about 250 words double-spaced, in a normal 12-point font.
Do emoji count as one character?
Most do. Some emoji are built from several symbols, such as flags or family emoji, and count as more than one. Services with character limits may also count them differently.
