Character Counter

Paste your text to see how many characters it has and how close it is to the limits that matter: a post on X, an Instagram bio or caption, a LinkedIn post, a YouTube title, an SMS, and the title and description shown on Google. For words and reading time, use the Word & Character Counter.

Character limits

  • X (Twitter) post
  • Instagram bio
  • Instagram caption
  • LinkedIn post
  • YouTube title
  • SMS (one message)
  • Google title (SEO)
  • Meta description (SEO)

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text in the box.
  2. Read the character counts at the top.
  3. Check the bars below: each one shows how many characters you have used and how many are left.
  4. A bar turns red when you go over the limit, so you can cut the text.

About the limits

  • The limits shown are commonly cited values for standard accounts, and platforms change them from time to time.
  • X counts links as a fixed length and some characters as more than one, so its own counter can differ from this one.
  • Google cuts titles and descriptions by pixel width, not by characters, so 60 and 160 are only a safe guide.
  • An SMS has 160 characters when it uses only the basic alphabet. Emoji and some accented characters make it shorter.

Frequently asked questions

How are characters counted?
Each visible symbol counts as one, including letters with accents and most emoji. Spaces and line breaks count in the first number, and the second number leaves them out.
Why does the count differ from the platform’s counter?
Platforms have their own rules for links, emoji and special characters. Use this tool as a close guide and check the final text in the app.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. It is counted in your browser and nothing is stored.
Do spaces count?
On most platforms, yes. That is why the main number includes spaces, and the “without spaces” number is shown separately for the cases where they are not counted.
