How the strength is estimated

  • The estimate is the length multiplied by the bits of randomness in each character, which depends on how many characters are available.
  • It assumes the password is truly random and used in only one place.
  • Below about 50 bits is weak, 50 to 70 is fair, 70 to 100 is strong and above 100 is very strong.
  • A long password with only letters and numbers can be stronger than a short one with symbols.
  • The estimate cannot protect you from reusing the password, from phishing or from a data breach at the website.

Is the password stored or sent anywhere?
No. It is created in your browser and exists only on your screen. Closing or reloading the page makes it disappear, so copy it first.
Is it really random?
It uses the secure random generator built into your browser, the same kind used for cryptography, and avoids the small bias of a simple remainder calculation.
How long should a password be?
For random passwords, 16 characters or more is a good choice for most accounts. Use a different one for every site and keep them in a password manager.
Why avoid look-alike characters?
Letters and numbers such as I, l, 1, O and 0 are easy to mix up when you read or type a password by hand. Turning this option on removes them.
Do some websites reject symbols?
A few do, or only allow certain symbols. If a site rejects the password, turn off the symbols and increase the length instead.
