Tips for a code that scans

  • Keep the text short. Short links make simpler codes that are easier to scan, especially when printed small.
  • Use a dark code on a light background. Inverted colors and low contrast fail on many scanners.
  • Leave the white border around the code. The tool adds it for you, so do not crop it.
  • Higher error correction survives scratches and small logos placed on top, but makes the code denser.
  • SVG stays sharp at any size, which makes it the best choice for posters and packaging.
  • Always scan the final printed version before you print a large batch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the QR code expire?
No. The text itself is stored in the pattern, so the code works as long as the link inside it works. The code does not depend on this website.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The code is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved.
PNG or SVG?
PNG is a regular image that works everywhere. SVG is a vector file that stays sharp at any size, so use it for print.
What does error correction do?
It adds redundancy so a code can still be read when part of it is dirty or covered. Higher levels survive more damage but need a bigger, denser pattern.
How much text fits in a QR code?
Roughly 2,900 characters of plain text at the lowest error correction, and less at higher levels. Codes with that much text are hard to scan, so shorter is better.
